West Coast Swing Classes

Starting Wed 12th March at
Bramshaw Village Hall

West Coast Swing is huge in the US and the fastest growing partner dance in the UK. WCS is the perfect progression from Jive, not only for the more experienced dancer wishing to take their dancing to a higher level, but also for the novice dancer interested in learning some smooth, sexy and sassy moves, along with vital technique which can be applied to a range of couples dances.

In partnership with Mo'Jive and under the guidance of Catriona Wiles (current UK champion) we will be running a regular WCS night every Wed at the Bramshaw Village Hall in the New Forest. This will include 2 classes and a freestyle.

These classes are an ideal opportunity for those that want learn WCS from scratch. The beginner's class will take you through the fundamentals.

For those that are attending Catriona's WCS workshops at Mo'Jive Southampton, this a great opportunity to consolidate what you have learnt and get the freestyle practise that will bring your dancing on.

Never seen West Coast Swing? Don't know what it is?
WCS a is smooth, stylish and creative social partner dance derived from Lindy Hop and evolved into a modern dance suitable for a wide range of music including R&B, swing, blues etc. It is characterised by a distinctive elastic look that results from its basic extension-compression technique of partner connection, and is danced primarily in a slotted area on the dance floor. The dance allows for both partners to improvise steps while dancing together. See below for some video clips.....

Class night timetable
7:30pm - Doors open, registration and a chance to get a drink and have a chat.
8:00 - 9:00 - 1st class WCS fundamentals for beginners and improvers.
9:00 - 9:15 - Freestyle
9:15 - 10:00 -  2nd class expanding on the fundamentals teaching variations and patterns.

10:00 - 11:00pm - Freestyle to fantastic music. This is where you really develop your ability to dance.

Both classes will provide styling tips and focus on the underlying principles of partner dancing e.g. how to lead and follow effectively, posture and musicality.

What to wear:
Wear whatever you feel comfortable in. It is advisable to wear shoes with a smooth sole to enable you to turn and spin with less effort making it easier on your knees. Some like a heel, others prefer a flat sole. For the Tango moves...a heel helps place the weight forward. When you are learning at first, you tend to use more energy and therefore perspire more, so bring a small towel and deodorant. For men...it is a good idea to bring a second shirt.

Don't worry if you have not got a partner:
Classes are based on a rotational system, so you will rotate during the class and get to meet and dance with everyone.

We also run a class at the beginning of the "2 Tone" freestyle events starting at 8pm.

Please contact us to find out about workshops and private lessons.

We are currently seeking a venue in the Bournemouth/Southampton area to teach Neo Tango. If you know of anywhere suitable, please let us know.
